“The communications industry is a fascinating area to work in. Where one week you can be writing about computers or homelessness, the next you are filming on a beach in Wales, or researching the recession of the 1990s.
Variety, they say, is the spice of life, and my enquiring mind appreciates all the different subjects I’ve learnt about over the years. ” |
I was one of the original 'media course' students, when there were only two such courses in the country. My degree in Theatre & Television Studies was a fantastic experience, and I was lucky enough to find work in corporate television production, where I have remained in various guises ever since.
I became a freelance Writer & Producer in 1992 and since then I've worked for numerous production companies and corporate clients around the country, from Scotland to Bristol via Leeds, the Midlands, Croydon, London and Reading. Much of my work comes from referrals.
Every project brings challenges and satisfaction. I've learnt and written about elements of banking and finance, cars, pharmaceuticals, computing, plumbing, watches, shoes, water treatment, universities and colleges, |
domestic violence, airports, charities, telecoms, donkeys and many more. I love to get my head around a new subject. (If you'd told me a year ago that I'd be explaining optimisation research and algorithms to students I'd probably have laughed).
When I start working on a new project I quietly absorb a brief and let it simmer until I reach that "Eureka!" moment when I know I've found the right approach.
I really enjoy working with clients from all walks of life. I'm affable, with an idiosyncratic sense of humour. I work hard and fast and I'm not egotistical about my work. My clients would say that I'm easy to work with, quick to respond to comments and changes and imaginative with subjects that are often fairly dry.
My enthusiasm for both writing and producing rubs off on every project. |
Client satisfaction is top of my list, and if that requires me to go the extra mile, then I’ll happily put my running shoes on!
Writing is an integral part of my life. Beyond my professional work, I also write and produce plays for my local community. The latest, “Beam Me Up, Dotty!” was a spoof on all things sci-fi. I love playing with words and these shows are where I let off steam and unleash the creative monster! Watch out for “The Good, the Bad and the Cuddly”, coming soon to the West End (of East Devon)!
There’s an explanation for the Mad Cow title, of course. When I went freelance in 1992, one of my first clients (thanks Carolyn) decided I needed a name t o work under. BSE had recently hit the headlines, and she felt the title suited my personality. I still don’t really understand….but the name stuck! |
